The Forum on Christian Studies (2021) & the Seminar on “Century: Research and Reflection on Chinese Christianity” were held in Beijing from October 30 to 31, attended by more than 80 experts and scholars.
According to the Institute of World Religions of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, this conference, co-sponsored by the Christian Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Institute of Buddhism and Religious Theory of the Renmin University of China, was held in the form of a network conference.
Zhuo Xinping, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress and member of the Bureau of Scientific Research Management of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, first reviewed the course of Christian studies in the past hundred years. He pointed out that Mr. Chen Yuan’s research on the history and literature of Chinese Christianity in the past hundred years, the interaction between Bible translation and the vernacular movement, and the inculturation movements mainly promoted by Catholic and Protestant denominations laid a solid foundation to discuss the issue of “Sinicization”.
The keynote speech of this forum was presided over by Liu Jingguang, president of the magazine China Religion. Scholars Li Qiuling, Li Tiangang, Liu Guopeng and Zhang Xiping respectively made academic speeches with the titles of “Some Thoughts on the Sinicization of Christianity”, “Teilhard’s Theology and Reflection on Globalization”, “An Analysis of the Possibility of the Encounter of Global Civilizations from the Global Ethical Dialogue of Hans Küng” and “A Preliminary Study on the Collation of Chinese Books in Western Studies”.
Later, the forum set up two sub-forums with the theme of “History and literature” and “Thoughts and Current Situation” respectively. Participating experts and scholars at the meeting held in-depth discussions on “Christianity and Modern Chinese”, “Christianity and Cultural Exchanges”, “Christianity and Chinese Society” and “the ‘Sinicization’ of Christianity and Its Context”, “Ideological Paradigm of ‘Sinicization’ of Christian Religion”, “Christianity and Modernity”, “Eastern Orthodoxy, Philosophy, Art and the Relationship Between Church and State”, “Christianity: ‘Sinicization’ and Ideological Dialogue” and other topics.
