China Offers Help After Earthquake Hits Taiwan

It was early Saturday morning when an earthquake with 6.4 magnitude had struck the southern part of Taiwan which had damaged several infrastructures trapping hundreds of residents.

Local media reported that rescuers have saved more than 160 residents while two, including a 10-day old baby girl and a 40-year-old man have been reported to be dead.

A 17-storey building collapsed  wherein more than 200 people are living.

According to the island's weather and earthquake monitoring agency, the earthquake was centered about 27 km northeast of Pingtung county seat which is measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale and with a depth of 16.7 kilometers.

Following the earthquake incident, China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) partnered  with Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF)  two hours after the quake struck near the city of Tainan.

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office said that the ARATS sent a letter to the SEF offering assistance. He added that the letter expressed concern and condolences for those who suffered in the tragedy, as well.
