How often does encouragement affect our lives?
A lot.
Decisions find their finality based on the encouragement that we receive, whether good or bad, whether internal or external.
We can encourage ourselves, and it happens all the time, "Can I do this? Yes, I think I can. I'll do it," or "Can I really? No. I don't think so. Maybe some other time." And whatever side we choose is what we go for.
But what happens when we encourage someone else?
Encouragement releases courage, hence the root word. How often have we heard someone say to another, "You can do it!" Even Nike's slogan is an encouragement, "Just do it!" These words give an extra push to a person.
The Bible commands this, you know?
But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. -Hebrews 3:13
What is sin's deceitfulness?
I'll try to paint a picture.
Let's say someone's having a really tough time trying to finish everything that needs to be finished for the day. Now, two people come along namely Encouragement and Discouragement.
Encouragement says, "You can do it. I know you can."
Discouragement, on the other hand, says, "No. You're not gonna make it on time."
If that someone gives in to discouragement, that person might just fail altogether. Enter self-pity, "Yeah, I'm so this...and that...I'll never make it."
Self-pity is a trap and it is also a sin. This sin has the potential to harden a person's heart, making someone believe that nothing he could ever do will ever be good enough. It has the potential to destroy.
This is why good encouragement is so important.
Encouragement stems out of love and compassion for one another. It builds each other up. The right encouragement can result in a lifetime of victory. And victory is so much better than self-pity.
When you encourage someone, you're boosting a person's confidence, giving courage and strength to do whatever has to be done, whether to run a mile or to stand in front of a thousand people. Your encouragement can be the beginning of another person's journey to victory, and you will be remembered for it.
Anne Frank says that, "Everyone has inside them a piece of good news. The good news is you don't know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is."
When you encourage someone, you give them a piece of good news that could set them on the course of greatness. You give love to someone and you help them to overcome. How beautiful a thing encouragement is.
