During the summer of 2024, a series of lectures on the sinicization of biblical interpretation was held at Guangdong Union Theological Seminary.
More than 100 pastors and church workers from diverse parts of Guangdong Province participated in the event from August 27 to 29, said the school. In his welcome speech at the opening ceremony, Rev. Xu Jieping, president of the seminary, emphasized that the purpose of this lecture series was to explore how Christianity can better integrate with Chinese culture and to explore its healthy development in China.
Over the course of several days, Xu delivered a lecture on "The Practical Significance of Luther's Principles of Biblical Interpretation in Promoting the Integration of Christianity and Chinese Traditional Culture." Rev. Cai Jianwei, vice president and academic dean of the seminary, gave a lecture on "A Narrative Evaluation of the Passion of Christ." Lecturer Rev. Huang Tianhua discussed "The Practice of Sinicization in Bible Translation and Interpretation." Full-time faculty member Rev. Qiu Dan delivered a talk on "Common Linguistic Issues in the Process of Sinicization of Biblical Interpretation." Rev. Pei Lianshan presented a special lecture on "The Issue of Translating 'Dragon' in the Context of Localization of Christianity."
As a training base for the continuing education of Christian leaders, the seminary plans to host more specialized lectures in the future, providing greater theoretical support for those working in the field.
