A church in the Hongkou District of Shanghai celebrated its centennial completion with a symposium.
Participants watched a short film titled "Centennial Development Review of Allen Memorial Church" on January 15, reported the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Religious Affairs.
The film showed that the church was established in 1922 and completed on New Year's Day in 1924. At that time, Allen Memorial Church was considered the largest Protestant church in terms of scale in Shanghai, originally belonging to the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1860, American missionary Andrew Young John William Allen came to China, and in 1882, he established the Anglo-Chinese College. Teachers, students, and nearby believers worshiped on the first floor of the college, which served as the forerunner to the church.
Wang Xinsheng, director of the Department for Christian Studies, School of Philosophy at Fudan University, delivered a presentation titled "Centennial Celebration of Allen Memorial Church - Preaching Christianity through Chinese Culture" during the symposium.
More than 80 people, including leaders from the CC&TSPMs and the ethnic and religious affairs offices in the city and districts, attended.
