Upon invitation from the Shanghai's Sheshan Catholic Seminary, a Protestant church leader conducted a lecture on the sinicization of biblical translation for seminary students.
As the vice general secretary of the China Christian Council (CCC) and chairman of the Shanghai Christian Council (CC), Reverend Geng Weizhong who majored in "Biblical Translation and Exegesis" and has been trained referring to the original biblical text, shared his years of academic and professional accomplishments with the students on December 4, reported Shanghai CC.
His lecture titled "The 'Word' Became Flesh Among Us: Translation, Exegesis, and Preaching" delved into the historical context of biblical translation, analyzing the temporal and societal needs in Chinese translations. He emphasized the necessity for new interpretations when facing different eras and communities. Furthermore, Rev. Geng explored the intersection of Chinese culture and biblical translation, addressing the challenges of maintaining the sacredness of the Bible while adapting it to literary and cultural contexts. He also discussed the historical value of Bible translations and their vital role in deepening the sinicization of Christianity.
