Cross Removal Campaign Spreads to Jiangxi Province

On May 7, 2020, a state-registered church located in Guangxin District in the city of Shangrao, Jiangxi Province had its cross removed. In a video shared by a local source, a crane pulled down the cross of Zhongxin Church in the afternoon.

The cross removal campaign in Anhui Province started in early January, suddenly ended due to the COVID-19 crisis, but resumed in early March. Now the campaign has spread to Jiangxi Province.  

A source said that a high level government office commanded subordinate offices to demolish all the crosses atop churches near highways, schools, and administrative departments.

However, local authorities are taking things a step further. It is reported that all the crosses in villages and towns of Guangxin District would be removed. 

A rumor said that the cross of a local church was replaced by China’s national flag in early May. 

Local house churches of Christian Assembly or "Little Flock" were closed down due to their "illegal" identities. Members have to gather at private houses. 

Local believers appealed to Christians to pray for the churches in the city.
